Nicholas's friends have turned their backs on him, and he has joined the pirate Paúel Benecke at Gdansk. In the spring, when the ports are open and the timber rafts are floating down the Vistula, Julius and his wife Anna come to Poland to open a new trading post in the east. Julius is gravely wounded at an archery tournament. Nicholas travels with Anna to the coast of the Black Sea, spurred by a message from the pirate Ochoa concerning the missing African gold treasure. But Nicholas's journey leads still farther: to Persia, Russia, and back to Burgundy.

For the verdict on Nicholas's future will be decided not in exotic foreign lands, but at home in Flanders. The Duke of Burgundy is at war with France. Will the de Fleury family be reconciled -- and will the House of Niccolò flourish once more?
